Horses that are hauled long distances and stressed can get infection of the lung and surrounding space, called the pleural cavity. This can be caused from inhalation of contaminated air for long periods of time in a trailer while having its head tied up, viral infections, and irritation from strenuous exercise which can limit the respiratory system’s capacity to clear debris.
